Each December, the Syracuse Parks Conservancy (SPC) Board of Trustees honors an individual or organization with The Guardian Award. This annual award is given for exceptional commitment, vision, leadership and dedication to promoting and preserving the beauty of parks and green spaces.

While Barbara and Ron Hoffman helped with the plantings in the Outer Comstock Neighborhood for many years, they really stepped up to the plate after OCNA's dedicated park steward, Martin Sage, died. They helped by planting flowers and perennials in the traffic triangle at Comstock at East Colvin St. and the planter in Comfort Tyler Park. They also mulched and weeded those areas and underneath our four welcoming signs. The work could not have been done without them. At present, Ron heads up the park committee of the Outer Comstock Neighborhood Association and Barbara is a member of the committee.

More recently, after receiving a SPC Greening Grant, Ron supervised ESF students in preparing an area behind the wall in the northwest section of Comfort Tyler park for planting 15 fragrant sumac bushes. Digging in an area with myriad roots was no easy task. Ron also worked on the planting, mulching, and watering of the plants.
